Stycons : June Ambrose

In the fashion industry, some people inspire us, some put us off, but I’m not one to hate someone’s attempt at being stylish, because if Beauty lies in the eye of the beholder, same goes with Fashion and Style.
I thought every once in a while I’d share with you my favourite style icons, or ‘stycons’ as I like to call them, because they’re an important source of inspiration and some are even role models and fashionesque godmothers.
This month’s stycon is JUNE AMBROSE.

For those of you that don’t know June Ambrose, she is a costume designer and personal wardrobe stylist to Jay-Z, Chrisette Michelle, Rihanna (pre-Umbrella era), Mary J. Blige, Busta Rhymes, Mariah Carey, Kim Cattrall, Kelly Ripa, Jazmine Sullivan amongst many others. She’s also Creative Director (or Style Architect as Jay-Z dubbed her) of Rocawear, just as she was for Missy Elliott’s Adidas Collection for 4 consecutive seasons.

As if it wasn’t enough, she actually wrote a book “Effortless Style” in 2006, and has been taking part in multiple TV shows where she was a consultant and gave precious styling tips.

June Ambrose also gives very interesting styling tips on her hilarious YouTube channel where she takes us with her on her fashionesque journeys (from Target to high end Department Stores). They’re a MUST WATCH.

I think that June Ambrose has definitely left her mark on the Hip Hop industry, bringing high fashion to a genre mostly known for low – budget, street looks.

She has a unique sense of personal style, an infectious personality and a creative eye that enables her to create amazing looks.
June Ambrose, the Opulent, Decadent, Distinguished Style Architect. ( In her own words & I couldn’t agree more)
_____________

Obsessed With...BLAZING BLAZERS

When you go on holiday, spend your days in swimsuits, come back to Brussels, go from swimsuits to catsuits, then back to little tees cause it's an indian summer, chances are you're gonna get sick. So of course, with the elderly and the kids...I got sick, enjoying the sunrays from my bed and popping antibiotics to shake the sickness away, I'm feeling kinda okay, and I missed blogging, so I'm back.

________

No wonder my latest fashionesque obsession is BLAZERS, I like them, love them. They make any style look neat without overdoing it, they make a classy cover up and since we see them everywhere, they're an easy find!

----------------

Here's a few of my favourite blazers...

OBJET DE FRENESIE – FANTASY FASHIONESQUE: The Trench Coat

_______________

In every respectable wardrobe, there are some key pieces such as the LBD, the white tee, the black pumps/stilettos, the perfect pair of denim that matches every possible outfit,…

The trench coat definitely belongs to that side of the wardrobe, most likely because of its ability to be worn everywhere and with everything.
The thing I like the most about the trench is that it fits everyone & anyone, upgrades a boring look and tones down an over-the-top outfit.
This season each and every fashion house created their own version of the famous piece, paying a special tribute to it by doing as many versions of it as possible.
This just means that you can find them everywhere, whatever your budget is, from TopShop to Burberry.

Do you really need more reasons to go and get one?

The September Issue

Me revoilà (encore une fois.) Voyons où cela nous mène.

Bonne Année Fashionesque !

___________________________

For as long as I can remember, September has always been a month of change, symptomatic of new challenges (and even sometimes) exciting perspectives. Good things always happened to me in September. The start of the year has always been September, not January. As a kid, my mom would ‘revamp’ my wardrobe and fill it with brand new outfits for the upcoming year, refurnish my bedroom, buy me a new schoolbag and of course, as I grew, I kept the habit of doing so every year. I changed my closet, my look, my hairstyle and sometimes my interior.

I absolutely LOVE September, because it’s the January of Fashion and there’s always some good fashionesque good news & scoops all month long!

(The 1st fortnight’s news included the launch of Zara Online, Lanvin for H&M’s collection, Marc Jacobs’ Plus Size collection, the spring opening of Forever 21 stores in Belgium,...)

For me, September 2010 is quite different though, cause for the 1st time in a long time, I don’t really know what this year has in store for me (no pun intended). I just know that I’m not ready to give up on this blog,…yet. Let’s see where this takes us.

Happy Fashionesque Year!

Robyn's Body Talk

I love music. Whatever the genre, I just love it. Whatever my mood. Unfortunately I don't BUY as much music as I'd like too, because albums nowadays are a budget, and I'm kinda picky when it comes to music, so I only buy what's good, from track 1 to hidden track. For example if possible I would only buy Beyonce's I Am...Sasha Fierce's album at half price, cause I literally only like the Sasha Fierce part. But I digress...

I recently bought Robyn’s Body Talk Part I album, without even listening to it (oooh risky !!)…Well not so much. So please let me do a full review of it so you can go get your copy. Or not.

1. Don’t Fucking Tell Me What To Do

That song sounds really The Hills/The City soundtrack. It’s a sort of electronic hymn that’s relatable and, it’s obviously more melody-oriented, than lyrically-wise with a repeatedly “ My drinking is killing me, my smoking is killing, your nagging is killing me, my record’s killing me, my mother’s killing me…”, actually it’s just a rebellious teenager kind of tune. Main message: “You’re killing me, don’t fucking tell me what to do.”

2. Fembot

Reminds me a lot of the Konichiwa album, sounds like a video game. Robyn sings a lot more on this one, and it definitely sounds like HER, and no one else, which I absolutely love.

Apparently the autotune isn’t dead at all, but then again, it completely fits the Fembot (as in female-robot) theme of the song, so it’s relevant.

3. Dancing On My Own

Robyn’s vocal range at it’s best. Fell in love with this song at 00:35 into it. Robyn is as heartbroken as she was in her previous album’s track “Be Mine!” only this time she sounds stronger. I can definitely relate to that song. The instrumental sounds very 80s – early 90s-ish.

Great post-breakup hymn for all the broken hearted girls who are dancing on their own. Just like me. I just love her ability to turn a sad song into a dancing tune. The only living legend to be able to properly do so would be…Madonna (Don’t Tell Me, Miles Away,…) and those are big shoes to fill. Good job Robyn!

4. Cry When You Get Older

Nice catchy pop song. Someone’s probably going to use that one in a commercial or something. Just another “love sucks and we all agree” kind of song.

5. Dancehall Queen

Fell in love with this one at 00:22! Dancehall/Reggae/Electro/Pop mashup with our very own Swedish Robyn’s sweet voice. She got the “riddim”, the gimmicks and everything, I think it’s a tribute to her influences. It’s an easy listening song. I wasn’t expecting this, so I smiled and shook my hips while travelling from Stockholm to Kingston. Feel good song. Loved it.

6. None Of Dem

This one’s dark. I love Robyn’s accent on this one, but that’s about it, I was a dancehall queen 2 seconds ago and now I feel bored to death. Great vocal arrangements but I’m not impressed with the rest of it. Actually at around 2:30 the song irritates me, but I’m waiting to be impressed at some point…or not.

7. Hang With Me [Acoustic Version]

Robyn’s a great live artist. Her forte is definitely acoustic, no autotune, no nothing, just flawless Robyn. I can relate to this song so lovely, it makes me smile. It’s soft but strong, rough but touchy, the kind of romantic comedy song that we all love to hate in public, but that we really secretly love cause we want to be that heroin.

It’s a good song to start a relationship. Well I believe it is.

8. Jag Vet en Dejlig Rosa
Very good way to end the album. It’s a traditional Swedish song about flowers, sounds like a lullaby.Lovely, very fairytale-like. I want Part II of the album.I love it.

Rainbow Hands

We all have fashion quirks or obsessions. Sometimes they only last for a season but most of the time, and I’ve been asking around,…they quickly become a pattern and we end up repeating those patterns over & over again.
I have a bunch of fashionesque quirks and I’m fully aware of them. I’m not denying them, and if anything, I’m owning up to them and boast them as some kind of stylistic trophy.
Truth is, some of my fashion quirks come from insecurities or even practicalities. For example: I own a great deal of scarves because I’m always cold, I just manage to pick them pretty and match my outfits, they’re cute, but for me they’re a necessity.

Another fashionesque practicality example would be my ginormous collection of black underwear…yeah it’s kinda sad, and makes you look like a nun but I take far too much time figuring out an outfit every morning to start to bother about my undies. I’m black, so they just fit perfectly under whatever. Period.
The fashion quirk I want to address today is: Nail polishes. I love them. Now this comes from an insecurity. My hands. They’re huge. I can actually cover my face by spreading my fingers wide open on it. So I quickly discovered that with the right manicure I could make my hands look cute, instead of creepy. That’s quite important when both of your jobs imply people getting a close-up of your hands daily! ;)

Most of my collection is made of H&M nailpolishes, I just love their names: "Miss Stone Heart" is my latest acquisition! <3

___________

Une infime partie de ma collection...

Mood Board # 1 - HEELS

I’ve been feeling under the weather lately (no pun intended!), hence the ABSENCE of posts and infinite procrastination. I had to remember what I used to do when I was a teenager to get ‘in the mood’…Fashion would always make me happy, and still has that power today. Blogging makes me happy. Blogging about my ‘pashion’ makes me happier. So I’m making a formal promise that this summer I’ll be a more consistent blogger, sharing whatever fashionesque or frénétique mood I’m in.

Talking about moods, here’s what’s been on my moody mind lately: HEELS. I go cuckoo for them and even turn around like a construction worker would at the clickety-clacking sound of them. Now I’m not a stiletto girl anymore so…there must be a rational explanation to this heels craziness I’m going through. I believe that my current outrageous-heels craving is subconsciously caused by the fact that I hurt my foot in my Pilates class last month (yes you can hurt yourself while doing Yoga Pilates, especially if you’re going all Russell Simmons like I do). So maybe it’s a girl on a diet thingy “no chocolate cake for you!”, or a pregnant woman thingy “no champagne for you!”…I guess that’s what it is!

Another reason is that this summer’s shoes trends is: ballet flats, clogs and wedges. And anyone who knows me, know I never play by the rules.

______________
